A painter of landscape and coastal scenes especially of San Francisco Bay, Kate Newhall was born in Fall River, Massachusetts and spent her early years in Concord, New Hampshire. She studied at Cooper Union in New York from 1863 to 1864, taking a certificate for "Drawing and Painting from Still Life." She also took classes from Carleton Wiggins, Rufus Wright and Mauritz F.H. de Haas.

Around 1870, she became a resident of Brooklyn and there earned a reputation for landscape painting. From 1875 to 1897, she lived in Plainfield, New Jersey and then moved to California with her brother, Charles Newhall, who was a roving missionary. She stayed briefly with him in Redlands before moving to Berkeley where she opened a studio and studied with William Keith. In California, her art interest turned to depictions of marine scenes and sunsets, and she supported herself the remainder of her life with her art. Most of her subjects came from the Bay Area and her forte was coastla scenes with waves crashing against rocks. She she also painted in Monterey, Santa Barbara and at Lake Tahoe.

She remained a close friend and sketching partner with William Keith and also of Leola Coggins.

Exhibition venues included the Brooklyn Art Association, San Francisco Art Association, National Academy of Design, and the Art Association of Berkeley.

Newhall died in Berkeley in 1917. Many of her paintings are signed K.W. Newhall.
